YULIYA MOSKVINA tells the story of Písnice, a housing development (sídliště) built on the outskirts of Prague in the 1980s. A strong community of local tenants struggled for many years for their right to privatize their own homes after the collapse of socialism in East and Central Europe. Due to heartless political and financial machinations and apathy of the government, Iniciativa Moje Písnice lost their fight in 2019. However, their struggle is worth recording and can teach us many lessons, including one about aspects and many sides of “privatization” in post-socialist cities.
